Born in Leningrad in 1956. In 1977 he graduated from the Faculty of Economic Cybernetics of the Sergo Ordzhonikidze Moscow Institute of Management. In 1977—1986 he worked at the Research Institute of Marine Transport and defended a dissertation in economics there. Upon graduation, in 1989, from the Academy of Foreign Trade, he taught at the Academy's Chair of World Economy and International Relations.

He entered on his banker career in Konversbank in 1991, where he established and headed first a Department and, later, a Directorate of Currency-Financial Operations. Was a member of the Bank's Board of Directors. In 1994 he took an active part in the founding of the Trustee Savings and Investment Bank which he headed from May 1994 to December 1995 as Chairman of the Board of Directors and then Chairman of the Council of Directors.

In August 1995 he was made Chairman of the Board of the Bank MENATEP and was made its President in January 1996.

Has been Chairman of the Board of Bank MENATEP since May 1997.

Married, has two children.
