THE MOSCOW CITY BAR ASSOCIATION (MCBA), founded in 1922, traces its origins to the Bar of the time when trial by jury was instituted in Russia, after the 1864 legal reform. Activities of outstanding lawyers of many generations, such as F.N. Plevako, S.V. Kallistratova, L.V. Sokolova, B.A. Zolotukhin, G.M. Reznik, T.G. Kuznetsova, G.P. Pavda, T.G. Lempert, and many more, are closely linked to the MCBA.
Cherishing the traditions of trial-by-jury lawyers, the MCBA builds its work upon relations of mutual trust with the client, unquestioned keeping of professional secrets, strict compliance with the rules of law and moral conduct in using legal defence methods and techniques. Today over 1,700 lawyers work there, including 22 Doctors and 69 Candidates of Science (Law) and 24 Merited Lawyers of the Russian Federation.
The principal areas of practical MCBA activities include:
— legal defence in criminal cases and representation in the traditional litigations (involving inheritance, housing, labour, family, and other disputes) in courts of general jurisdiction;
— consultations and preparation of documentation for banking, commercial, financial, tax, customs and investment legislation, including matters pertaining to conclusion of deals, export-import contracts, cooperation agreements, trade agreements, leasing-and-credit agreements;
— defence of clients’ rights in trials and litigations involving acquisition, possession and disposal of property;
— conduct of cases involving state registration of property;
— preparation and conduct of legal and arbitration cases, presentation of clients’ interests in court and arbitration bodies in Russia and abroad;
— provision of aid in arriving at informed and well-founded solutions of tax, financial, accounting, payment-and-settlements, administrative-managerial, legal, and other problems.
The MCBA unites 34 legal-advice offices, 46 lawyer bureaux, including such well-known ones as “Business and Law”, “Chaadayev and Partners”, “Reznik, Gagarin and Partners”, “Barshchevsky and Partners”, “Padva, Rozenberg and Partners”, “ALM”, “Argument», and many more. Statesmen, presidents of various banks, major corporations, associations and companies, and Russian citizens and foreign nationals enlist the services of MCBA lawyers.
