Before 1918 the city of Marx, called Ekaterinenstadt (and unofficially - Baronsk), was a German colony established by a decree of Catherine the Great. Later on, and until 1941, the city was named Marxstadt. The district was formed in 1918, and since 1942 it is known as the Marx District. The area of the Marx District - 2,910 square kilometres. Inhabited localities: the city of Marx, nine townships and 50 villages. Population - 67,900 (including 32,900 people living in the city of Marx).
The Marx District plays an important part in the economic development of the Saratov Region. Operating there are 32 industrial enterprises of all forms of ownership. The largest of them are the plants "Volgodizelapparat" and "Agat". The former specializes in manufacturing fuel pumps for diesel engines of a type produced nowhere else in Russia. Besides the former Soviet republics, they are exported to Italy, Germany and Switzerland. As for "Agat", a close joint-stock company, it turns out communication equipment, household appliances, furniture, special engineering articles, etc. The agrarian sector of the district's economy comprises 346 farms and 27 agricultural enterprises the largest of which are the joint-stock companies "Maslodel", "Pivzavod" and "Sokol" and the production cooperative "Sad" and Agribusiness Firm "Leader". Predominant in the district is the production of grain crops, above all wheat. The current leaders in grain and livestock production are the farming associations "Volga" and "Trudovoye" and CJSC "Meliorator". The city of Marx has business contacts with many Russian regions and with foreign countries. Thus, furniture and small-size agricultural implements are manufactured in Marx in partnership with Yugoslavia; a brewery, a malt house and a brickyard are being built in partnership with Czechia and France. The processing industry and agricultural enterprises "Maslodel" and "Trudovoye" cooperate with the "Tetra-Loval" and "Alfa-Loval" companies in delivering Swedish-made equipment for livestock farming. A Polish technology of pig-fattening is used at the "Volga" association. Under way is a Russian-German programme to stimulate the setting up of peasant farms and to improve the social well-being of villages in the district.
