According to the results of a recent contest of the State Committee for Construction of the Russian Federation (Gosstroy) VODOKANAL of ST. PETERSBURG was named the best enterprise of the Russian housing and public utilities system for the year 2000. The St. Petersburg permanently functioning water supply system traces its origin back to the year 1858 when the Joint-Stock Company of the St. Petersburg Water-works was formed. Its charter was endorsed by Tsar Alexander II himself.
Today the quality of potable water delivered by the VODOKANAL water stations meets the requirements of the state sanitary rules and norms. Despite the difficult economic conditions of the past few years the enterprise has implemented a number of large-scale projects including construction of Eastern Europe’s first plant for burning wastewater sediments; the opening of Russia’s first centres for measuring the discharge of water and work with water users; modernization and repair of sewerage and water-supply lines, with the use of trenchless methods, etc.
Construction of the South-Western wastewater treatment facilities, to be commissioned in 2004, will permit reducing the discharge of unpurified wastewaters into the Gulf of Finland and improving the ecological situation in the entire region. The partners of the State Unitary Enterprise “Vodokanal of St. Petersburg”, taking part in implementation of the said project, include organizations and firms of the Northern countries. This is the first attempt to secure large-scale and serious international cooperation in the cause of protection of the Baltic Sea.
