Tyumen — the first Russian city in Siberia — was founded in 1586 for the sake of protecting Russian and Tatar settlements from the raids of the steppe nomads. In the course of time Tyumen became an important place on the trade route from Europe to Central Asia, Persia and China.
By the end of the 19th century the city had a well-developed ship-building, timber, fish and leather industries, carpet-weaving production and animal-drawn transport.
The events of 1917, the Civil and later the Great Patriotic wars left their mark on the city development. On August 14, 1944 Tyumen became a centre of the vast Tyumen Region. And the discovery of oil and gas fields on its territory opened a new page in its history.
Tyumen today is a large administrative centre of the main oil and gas producing region of the country, economic, scientific, cultural and health-improving regional Russian city.
The convenient geographical position of Tyumen, the maturity of its transport network (air, land and waterways) make it the most important transport junction of the region. The average monthly retail commodity circulation has reached 1.3 billion roubles. The leading industries are: mechanical engineering, medical and food industries, woodworking. There are about 50 scientific-research and design institutes, ten higher educational institutions, three drama theatres, the Philharmonic Society, four palaces of culture, seven museums and ten stadiums in this “capital of villages” as Tyumen used to be called.
The living standards of the Tyumen residents are considerably higher than in the adjacent regions or than the Russian average. And in terms of the new housing built per one resident Tyumen has been one of the leaders among big Russian cities for many years.
