After the shock which accompanied the economy reformation in Russia many defence enterprises experienced a deep depression. This crisis also affected the Udmurt Republic, since it was mainly oriented on the defence output.
In this connection the Government of Udmurtia enlisted all efforts and resources to bring about conversion at the biggest enterprises and carry out their technological re-equipment. Thanks to the manufacture of the civil output the growth rates of industrial output volume in Udmurtia exceeded the Russian average already in the years 2000-2001.
In spite of many difficulties, the Government managed to stop the slump in the oil production volume in Udmurtia and prepare a basis for its further growth. In recent years the republic has also become a centre of equipment production for oil and gas industries. The quality of those products is not inferior to the foreign analogues, but they are considerably less expensive. Enterprises manufacturing instruments and modern communication facilities are making a tremendous contribution to the economy of the republic, for they get numerous orders from leading foreign companies.
A stable economic upturn enabled the Government to solve the problems of individual house-building quite successfully. Its rates are among the highest in the country. In keeping with the programme of socio-economic development of Udmurtia in the years 2001-2004, a vigorous construction of schools and medical institutions has been launched, a network of motor highways is being developed, schools and medical institutions are facilitated with modern equipment and the problems of the population employment are being solved in the republic.
