The history of the NOVOVORONEZH NUCLEAR POWER PLANT started on September 30, 1964. On that day the unit No. 1 of the plant generated first electric current. A total of five units with water-cooled power reactors were constructed over this period. Commercial tests of many technical innovations took place there as well as the study and try-out of the experience of operation and repair of the newest equipment, processes control and nuclear and radiation safety.
In the past 36 years the plant generated over 336.0 billion kwh of electricity. During that period there have been no accidents with the release of radioactive substances into the environment. Moreover, the radiation background around the plant is diminishing steadily. The plant has not had any limiting impact on the economical activities of the region.
At present three units are in operation at the NOVOVORONEZH NUCLEAR POWER PLANT (two others have exhausted their design service life). They have a total capacity of 1,834 megawatts and generate yearly from 9 to 10.5 billion kwh of cheap electricity and from 440 to 465,000 gigacalories of heat energy. The plant satisfies from 80 to 90 per cent of the electricity needs of the Voronezh region and about 50 per cent of the heat needs of Novovoronezh. The further development of the plant is related to the construction of two new power units. They will be modern power facilities, meeting international safety requirements, having large heat generating capacity and capable of supplying heat to the nearest population areas of the region.
